Mumbai: Actor Sara Ali Khan, known for her frequent spiritual trips to the Himalayas, has found herself at the centre of a growing controversy after a new statement from the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee. The actor, who often visits the sacred Kedarnath Temple, may now face restrictions unless she fulfils a new condition.

New rule sparks debate

In an interview with the press at Dehradun, committee chairman Hemant Dwivedi said that non-Sanatan Dharma followers will be asked to provide an affidavit stating their religious beliefs in Hinduism before entering the temples governed by the committee.

In reference to Sara, he stated that in case she declares her devotion to Sanatan Dharma and produces the affidavit demanded, she will be allowed to pray at Kedarnath. This statement has triggered conversations online, with many questioning the implications of such a rule for visitors of diverse backgrounds.

Sara’s spiritual connection to Kedarnath

Sara Ali Khan shares a strong emotional bond with Kedarnath. She first visited the shrine in 2017 during the shoot of her debut film Kedarnath, where she starred opposite Sushant Singh Rajput. Since then, she has returned multiple times, often sharing glimpses of her visits and expressing deep faith.

However, the latest development could change that tradition.

Family background comes into focus

Sara comes from a culturally diverse family. She is a daughter of Amrita Singh as well as actor Saif Ali Khan. Her grandmother Sharmila Tagore has been married more than forty years to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Saif is now married to Kareena Kapoor.

One of the sources that were very close to the family was very much disappointed and confused about the development. The source noted that previously these queries concerning faith and identity were seldom asked particularly in the case of families that have been long time emblem of cultural harmony.

No official response yet

Sara has not commented on the matter so far. But the situation has clearly stirred emotions among her well wishers and sparked a wider discussion about faith, identity and access to religious spaces in modern India. Whether this will impact her future visits to Kedarnath remains to be seen.
