The world of Indian folklore-based cinema is about to get even more intense. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has signed on board as one of the main stars of Tumbbad 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2018 cult film Tumbbad. The news has immediately made the fans and film enthusiasts rise to a new all-time high with many terming it as one of the strongest partnerships in recent history.
The sequel marks a major expansion of the eerie folklore universe created by Sohum Shah, who both headlined and produced the original film. Although the information regarding the character that Nawazuddin plays is being kept under a tight wrap, the producers have affirmed that he will form an important part that the sequel will use to provide the story and emotional background.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui On Joining Tumbbad 2
Turning into a franchise, Nawazuddin expressed that Tumbbad has been a movie he greatly loved, and always looked forward to watching because of its novelty and storytelling by ambience. He disclosed that he was immediately attracted to the story after Sohum Shah presented him with the idea of a sequel, and he chose to become a part of the project.
Nawazuddin also mentioned that it is quite a thrilling project that the company will be collaborating with Sohum Shah and Pen Studios to do a film of such scale. He called his personality multi-layered and multifaceted, and stated that he is eager to dive into the atmosphere of immersion in the Tumbbad world with a team of passionate individuals.
Sohum Shah, who is leading and producing the sequel, expressed his joy over Nawazuddin coming on board. He said that Nawazuddin brings unmatched intensity and authenticity to every role he plays, and his presence will take the emotional and psychological depth of Tumbbad 2 to a whole new level. Shah states that the character of Nawazuddin will be a key element in continuing the universe of the sequel that will be darker and richer and more impactful.
Tumbbad 2 To Expand the Cult Universe
The original Tumbbad earned critical acclaim for its haunting visuals, chilling atmosphere, and the gripping myth of Hastar. Though it had a modest theatrical run in 2018, the film found renewed love after its 2024 re-release, introducing the story to a whole new generation of viewers.
Tumbbad 2 is planned on a larger scale with Sohum Shah under the franchise of Sohum Shah Films in partnership with Pen Studios under Jayantilal Gada. The sequel will delve into the mythology, feelings and psychological complexities that made the first such a cult cult film.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Work Front
On the work front, Nawazuddin Siddiqui continues to balance strong theatrical roles with impactful OTT projects. He has just come back as Inspector Jatil Yadav in Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders, a spin-off of Raat Akeli Hai.
He also appeared in 2025 theatrical release Thamma as part of the horror-comedy universe of Maddock Films, alongside Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. Next, Nawazuddin will appear in the heist thriller Faraar and now in the long-awaited Tummbad 2, which is being developed as one of the most ambitious genre movies in Hindi cinema.
