Mumbai: The excitement around Mirzapur: The Film has taken a major leap as the makers officially begin shooting for the much anticipated big screen adaptation of the cult crime thriller. The film, produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, is the film adaptation of one of the most popular OTT franchises ever in India, which will be released in theaters in 2026.

Recent reports indicate that shooting is already underway in Rajasthan with major sequences being shot in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. The rugged landscapes of the desert state are set to add a fresh visual texture to the gritty world of Mirzapur.

Ali Fazal Drops BTS Glimpse as Guddu Bhaiya Returns

Adding to the buzz, Ali Fazal shared a behind the scenes video from the sets, confirming that cameras are rolling. The clip features his iconic character Guddu Pandit, also known as Guddu Bhaiya, making a powerful return. The video captured the instant reminder of why the character is one of the most feared in the history of Indian streaming with only a back shot and his usual walk.

Taking to social media, Ali Fazal thanked the people of Rajasthan for their warmth and hospitality. His heartfelt caption, when he mentions Jaisalmer and Jodhpur as well as a typical greeting resonated with the fans and only created more buzz about the project.

Speaking about stepping back into the role, the actor shared that returning to Guddu Bhaiya’s world is always intense. He outlined the character as one that bears a serious silence and internal burden. Ali added that the shooting in Jaisalmer has added a new dimension to the plot and the journey has just begun and audiences in the big screen have much more left in the movie.

A Bigger Canvas for the Mirzapur Universe

Mirzapur: The Film is being seen as a significant upgrade in scale and storytelling for the franchise. The theatrical format will enable the makers to explore further into the themes of power, politics, revenge and survival that made the original series a cultural phenomenon.

Created by Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the film brings back several beloved characters. Pankaj Tripathi comes back as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal comes back as Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu comes back as Munna Tripathi, with their return being one of the largest talking points since the announcement. Abhishek Banerjee reprises his role as Compounder, while Rasika Dugal returns as Beena Tripathi and Shweta Tripathi as Golu Gupta.

The cast also includes Jitendra Kumar, who replaces Vikrant Massey in the film adaptation, along with Ravi Kishan and Mohit Malik in key roles. Sonal Chauhan also recently stated that she would join the ensemble, which made the lineup even stronger.

Release Plan and What Lies Ahead

Backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, Mirzapur: The Film becomes India’s first major OTT series to fully transition into a cinematic universe. The film is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release in 2026. The movie will be available globally on Prime Video in India and other than 240 countries and territories eight weeks after its theatrical release.
