Mumbai: Indian cinema is set to witness a once-in-a-generation moment as two of its greatest legends, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, are coming together once again for a brand-new feature film, tentatively titled KHxRK. Produced by Red Giant Movies, the project marks their first full-fledged collaboration in over four decades, triggering massive excitement among fans and the film industry alike.
Nelson Dilipkumar will direct the film; his 2023 blockbuster Jailer established him as one of the most commercially successful filmmakers in the history of Tamil cinema. Giving Nelson the reins and the two screen icons heading the cast KHxRK is already being acclaimed as one of the most ambitious Indian projects in the recent years.
A legendary reunion after 45 years
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth had extensive screen time as they appeared in over a dozen films together. Apoorva Raagangal, Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, 16 Vayathinile and Ninaithale Inikkum are some of their most popular joint ventures.
Their final full-length co-starring film was the 1979 fantasy film Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum, directed by I. V. Sasi. In 1981, Kamal Haasan returned to the screen briefly in a cameo role in the climax of Thillu Mullu, a comedy directed by K. Balachander, the last screen time the two have shared.
As both actors rose to unmatched superstardom, they mutually chose to pursue individual paths, making this reunion a deeply emotional and historic moment for Indian cinema.
