Mumbai: 2026 is set to begin on a high-energy note for Akshay Kumar as the actor prepares to start shooting for his next big commercial entertainer. Directed by Anees Bazmee, the film will commence shooting in Mumbai on January 19, the first time the actor and the filmmaker will be working together after over 10 years.
According to an Instagram post by trade insider Vickey Lalwani, the shoot will officially commence in the second half of January, with Mumbai serving as the primary filming location. The buzz about the project is already growing because of its star cast, and experienced creative team, and the prospects of a crowd-pleasing story.
Akshay Kumar and Anees Bazmee reunite after Thank You
Anees Bazmee had earlier confirmed the collaboration with Akshay Kumar in an interview with Mid-Day, expressing his excitement about working together again after Thank You in 2011. The director explained that they have a great mutual respect with each other and stated that Akshay immediately joined on board once he heard about the idea.
Soon after, reports emerged that Vidya Balan would be playing the female lead opposite Akshay Kumar. This was subsequently after being verified when producer Dil Raju was contacted by Vickey Lalwani who confirmed that both Akshay and Vidya are official cast in the film.
The upcoming project will mark Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan’s first on-screen collaboration in six years, following their successful outing in Mission Mangal in 2019. Their being together has contributed to the excitement, particularly among enthusiasts who found their combination in previous movies to be entertaining.
Not a remake but inspired by Sankranthiki Vasthunam
It was rumored that the film is a remake of Sankranthiki Vasthunam of 2025 in Telugu. But according to Dil Raju, Akshay Kumar and Anees Bazmee is not a remake as such.He stated that only the basic concept has been borrowed from the Venkatesh-starrer, while the story, characters, and treatment have been reworked to suit Hindi cinema audiences.
It has been reported that the movie has two powerful female actors, and one of the leading roles is performed by Vidya Balan. While details about the second female lead and the full storyline are being kept under wraps, sources suggest that the film will blend humour, emotion, and well-defined character arcs, a space where Anees Bazmee has consistently delivered.
Produced by Dil Raju’s banner, more big projects lined up
The film is being produced by Sri Venkateswara Creations, headed by Dil Raju. Speaking at the 56th International Film Festival of India, producer Sirish from the banner also revealed that the production house has several major projects in the pipeline.He also confirmed that he intended to make a film with Salman Khan, to be directed by Vamshi Paidipally, who has made hits such as Maharshi and Varisu.
In addition, Sirish also announced that the banner will back a film starring Pawan Kalyan, further underlining the production house’s strong presence across industries.
As Akshay Kumar enters his mass entertainer zone, Vidya Balan enters a powerful role, and Anees Bazmee takes charge, the January 19 shoot date is a good omen of 2026 being a good year in Bollywood. All eyes are now on further announcements regarding the film’s title, additional cast, and release plans.
