Mumbai: Out of all the films Aamir Khan has done, many stand out for their strong social message and emotional impact. From Taare Zameen Par to Dangal, his movies often challenge deep-rooted beliefs and highlight the flaws in society. One of these movies is PK, and it was a huge box office hit and at the same time, an extremely debatable one. However, the little-known fact is that PK was not originally expected to end in such a way.
PK’s Original Ending Was Changed
In an interview with Variety India, Aamir disclosed that he and the director Rajkumar Hirani were not absolutely happy with the final version of PK. He told that the original script was of a different second part, but revisions were necessary following the release of Oh My God, in which Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal starred.
Since both films touched upon similar themes related to religion and blind faith, the makers of PK felt the need to rework the narrative to avoid direct comparisons. Whereas Oh My God challenged the concept of blind faith in a legal and social manner, PK did so by applying the view of an alien to unveil contradictions and hypocrisy. Although the general storyline was different, some similar thoughts compelled Hirani to amend the second part.
Aamir recounted that Hirani insisted on these changes and despite the eventual success of the film as a blockbuster, the two of them felt that it was not exactly the story they had originally envisioned Despite this, they accepted the final result as the best possible version under the circumstances.
How PK and Oh My God Became Two Sides of the Same Coin
The similarity between PK and Oh My God has often been discussed, and Aamir acknowledged that while the core idea of PK was unique, certain themes overlapped. He described that the main protagonist in PK is an alien that challenges human beliefs, whereas Oh My God addresses the theme of God and its blind service in the form of a courtroom drama. To avoid additional comparisons, the second part of PK was rewritten, which resulted in the slightly different storyline and conclusion.
Even with these changes, PK went on to become the highest-grossing Indian film at the time of its release. The movie featured Anushka Sharma, late Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt playing major roles. It was followed by Baahubali 2 and Dangal that broke its record.
Aamir Khan’s Current and Upcoming Projects
On the work front, Aamir has had a busy and promising year. Recently, his production house supported Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, the debut film of stand-up comedian Vir Das as a director. Imran Khan also appeared in the film in a cameo role which was his first appearance on screen in almost 10 years. Aamir himself made a small appearance in the movie and talked about how fun it was to have a taste of comedy.
Aamir is currently anticipating the release of his second production Lahore 1947, which reunites him with director Rajkumar Santoshi. It starred Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, and is scheduled to be released on an Independence Day this year.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Hirani and Aamir were planning a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, though the project is currently on hold due to creative differences.
Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, where he played a basketball coach training neurodivergent children. Prasanna directed the film, which also featured Genelia Deshmukh and was released in theatres on June 20 last year. Next he is doing Ek Din with his son Junaid Khan with Sai Pallavi.
Even years after its release, PK continues to spark conversation, and Aamir’s recent revelation has given fans a fresh reason to revisit the iconic film and imagine how different its ending could have been.
