New Delhi, November 15: Billionaire industrialist Sunjay Kapoor’s sudden death has led to a major legal dispute over assets estimated to be worth more than ₹30,000 crore. The matter is currently being examined by the Delhi High Court. Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, appearing for Karisma Kapoor’s children Samaira and Kiaan, told the court that Sunjay had committed to taking care of their expenses after his separation from Karisma in 2016. Their side argued that this responsibility included day-to-day costs, schooling, and higher education fees, and that these obligations were clearly laid out in the separation terms agreed upon by both parties.
Advocate Rajiv Nayar, who represents Priya Kapoor, opposed the claim by stating that all financial duties toward the children had already been fulfilled. He pointed out the children had received ₹1,900 crore from a family trust, which, according to him, made the allegation of unpaid expenses baseless. Nayar suggested that Samaira’s complaint about her US university fees being unpaid for two months appeared designed to attract media attention and create unnecessary noise around the case.
Justice Jyoti Singh responded strongly to the fee-related allegation. She called it “melodramatic” and said that such minor issues should not come before the court. She added,
I don’t want to spend more than 30 seconds on this. This question should not come to my court again. I don’t want this hearing to be melodramatic.”
Her remarks indicated clear dissatisfaction with the nature of the claim compared to the larger dispute at hand.
The primary case filed by Karisma’s children accuses Sunjay Kapoor’s third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapoor, of forging his will for personal benefit. This forms the main conflict in the estate battle. The court will continue hearing arguments on the interlocutory application next week.
Given the size of the estate and the serious allegations on record, the case is expected to attract significant attention as it proceeds. The court’s further hearings will likely shape the direction this legal battle ultimately takes.
