Protesters gathered outside the new Harry Potter flagship store in London, voicing opposition to J.K. Rowling's controversial views on transgender rights.
The grand opening of the U.K.’s largest Harry Potter store on Oxford Street in London was met with significant disruption from transgender rights protesters on November 4, 2026. The store, which spans 21,000 square feet and is part of The Ribbon development, attracted a crowd of demonstrators who voiced their concerns over author J.K. Rowling’s long-standing controversial views on gender identity.
Approximately 16 protesters gathered outside the store, holding signs with messages such as “protect trans lives” and “stop funding trans erasure.” They used megaphones to chant slogans including “trans rights are human rights” and urged fans waiting in line to reconsider their support for the franchise. Despite the protest, many attendees appeared to largely ignore the demonstrators as they entered the store.
The protest coincided with heightened scrutiny of Rowling, who has faced backlash for her anti-transgender views, particularly as the release of an HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter series approaches. Critics have accused her of promoting transphobia, a sentiment echoed by several cast members from the upcoming series, including John Lithgow and Bel Powley, who have publicly distanced themselves from her views.
In addition to the protests, the event was marked by the presence of police, who were called to ensure safety amid the demonstrations. The timing of the protest was particularly poignant, as it occurred just days before the ceremonial unveiling of the Harry Potter Christmas lights on Oxford Street, an event that has been met with calls for cancellation from activists.
More than 11,000 people have signed a petition urging London Mayor Sadiq Khan to take action against what they describe as transphobia associated with the store’s opening. The petition highlights the contradiction between Khan’s public support for trans rights and the celebration of a franchise linked to Rowling.
The Hollywood Reporter and Variety have both reported on the protests, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding the Harry Potter franchise and its creator.
