Mumbai: Sunny Deol has once again proven that when it comes to big-screen patriotism and action, he remains a force to reckon with. Border 2 has not only basked in a thunderbolt at the Indian box office but it has also not just matched the hype but has also done even better than the first weekend of the historic blockbuster Dhurandhar last year. The film is just three days old, but its initial performance has already made it one of the largest opening in Hindi cinema in recent times.

Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is riding high on franchise nostalgia, mass appeal and Sunny Deol’s enduring star power. The film opened on Friday with a strong ₹30 crore net, an impressive figure for a non-holiday release. The momentum picked up on Saturday, with collections jumping to ₹36.5 crore, showing a solid growth of over 21 percent. Sunday turned out to be the real game changer. The film, driven by exceptionally positive word of mouth, full multiplexes and bumper attendance in mass circuits, earned a whopping ₹54.5 crore, a substantial improvement of more than 49 percent. This pushed the first weekend figures to an overwhelming ₹121 crore net.
Border 2 vs Dhurandhar: A Weekend Win, But a Longer Test Ahead
The comparison with Dhurandhar is inevitable. Aditya Dhar’s directorial, headlined by Ranveer Singh along with Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt and R Madhavan, had opened to decent but not earth-shattering expectations. On its opening Friday Dhurandhar had earned ₹28 crore, and ₹32 crore on the following Saturday and Sunday, respectively. It has had a ₹103 crore opening weekend and this is evidently lower than that of Border 2.

Purely on opening weekend numbers, Border 2 has raced ahead by ₹18 crore and shown stronger day-to-day growth. However, the real legacy of Dhurandhar was not built in its first three days. It was the film’s extraordinary staying power that rewrote box office history. Over its long theatrical run, Dhurandhar maintained steady footfalls, even earning around ₹1 crore on Day 51. This movie later on became the highest grossing Hindi film in India with an estimated India net collection amounting to ₹832.05 crore. The gross in India was approximately ₹998.2 crore with overseas markets contributing ₹294 crore, making the global total approximately ₹1292.2 crore.
This is the benchmark Border 2 will now be measured against. Sensation is high on the initial roar, but this has to be followed up with weekdays, holidays and returning audiences to determine whether it is a marathon runner or a strong sprinter.
A Major Milestone for Sunny Deol
In addition to comparisons, Border 2 has already reached a significant personal milestone of Sunny Deol. The film has already attained the rank of his second-highest Hindi net grosser with ₹121 crore net in only three days. It has surpassed Jaat, which had received ₹88.72 crore during its run. Only Gadar 2, with its massive ₹525.7 crore net collection, stands ahead. This clearly reinforces Sunny Deol’s unmatched pull in large-scale action and patriotic cinema, even decades into his career.
Border 2 has a cast of powerful ensemble cast as well: Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Paramvir Cheema, Mona Singh, Anya Singh, Medha Rana and Sonam Bajwa make it fresh to the franchise, yet the movie has managed to keep its tender heart.
At this point, Border 2 has the boasting rights of crushing Dhurandhar on the first weekend. But with Republic Day and crucial weekdays coming up, the industry will be watching closely. The real story will unfold over time, as the film attempts to turn a thunderous start into a historic box office journey.
